There are many sports car lovers who are afraid that they will soon go the way of the dinosaur because of high fuel prices and the advances in performance technology that is enabling family sedans to compete with sports cars in quickness. While it does seem that there has been somewhat of a decline in sports cars along with increased sales of SUVs some of the current developments tell me that the vehicles we love are not going to be around in large numbers but they will still be around.

Back in the day, muscle cars ruled in the performance realm and regular sedans and trucks couldn’t keep up. SUVs didn’t even exist. Now with the innovations in design and engine performance and the light weight materials being used automakers are getting superior results out of smaller engines. In addition normal production vehicles now handle as good as a race car.

Some of the other issues that are causing the decline in the numbers of sports cars seen on the road include comfort and affordability. Sports cars in the truest sense are not built for comfort, they are built for speed and long road trips are no fun. The larger cars of today that still offer a sporty ride give you the best of both worlds. As far as the affordability issue goes, it is quite simple most families are just unable to afford the expense of having a car just for fun. People these days have to make use of their cars on a daily basis as it has become cost prohibitive to keep one around just as a hobby or weekend car.

In the beginning cars were used as sport, for racing across country in rallies and contests. It wasn’t until much later that they became mainstream everyday drivers.

Some good news for the high end sports car market is that there are several companies that are beginning production of hybrid or electric sports cars. Some of the top companies like Toyota, Honda, Mazda, and Mitsubishi are working on bringing them to the open market.

The most promising one that I have seen as a true sports car in terms of performance and the fact that it is a two seater is the new totally electric roadster from Tesla Motors, a company backed by the founders of Google and Paypal. The car does 0 to 60 in less than 4 seconds and it runs on laptop batteries!

The appeal and popularity of various Hybrid Cars have grown especially with the concerns about high gasoline prices as well as a worsening air pollution. Here are some bits of useful information that would help you learn more about hybrid cars and how they may help you save on gas and be somehow protected from worries about rising gasoline prices.

A hybrid vehicle is a type of car that makes use of at least two different fuel sources to make it work. Both fuel sources usually are being used together in some instances to help propel the vehicle more efficiently. There are several different combinations possible for hybrid cars, but the most common hybrid car so far is the gas-electric hybrid.

The gas-Electric Hybrid Car, also known as the hybrid electric vehicle or HEV, is known to make use of a gasoline internal combustion engine or ICE and a separate electric motor to help power it. While the ICE makes use of gasoline to make it run, an electric battery is used to store the electrical energy that powers the hybrid car’s electric motor. The HEV usually has a gasoline engine that is smaller than a conventional one used in standard gasoline powered cars. Use of more advanced technology makes this possible and allows the HEV have better running efficiency as well as substantially reduced pollutant emissions.

Aside from the gasoline engine, the hybrid electric car also has a special electric motor built in that not only helps provide added power to the car but also acts as a generator when not being used. The electric motor can act as a generator in situations where it is not being used to help charge the battery for added efficiency.
In a common HEV set up, the car uses its electric motor when being propelled at very low speeds. The gasoline engine acts as a secondary power source when the HEV requires much needed power as in the case of climbing up an incline. The gasoline engine also has the ability to compensate the electric motor with power whenever the car needs it in order to go faster. The gas and the electric motor can also work in combo at certain instances if needed.

Because the hybrid electric car makes use of both an electric motor as well as a gasoline motor, a substantial improvement in car mileage is somehow achieved. A hybrid electric vehicle or HEV can run longer distances using the same amount of fuel as compared to a conventional gasoline powered car. Whenever the electric motor is needed, gasoline use is avoided. This results in less gas used when running the same distance as a traditional gasoline powered vehicle.

And because the hybrid electric car has a smaller gasoline engine, the hybrid car can also runs more efficiently because of lesser engine weight as compared to the conventional car. The working parts of the hybrid car engine also are smaller and require less energy to move. This efficiency makes the hybrid electric car a great option for people concerned with rising gasoline prices. Using the hybrid car can help drivers save a substantial amount of gas when traveling. Not only that, using the hybrid car can also help in reducing pollutant emissions by using less gas while traveling.

2 Demand For Hybrid Cars Continues To RiseThe number of Hybrid Cars registered in America last year set a record.

The high cost of gasoline is one reason for the surge in demand, but other elements are technology and variety, KMBC’s Micheal Mahoney reported.

“Now that we’re looking at $4 a gallon gas, these are up to about 35 to 40 percent of our sales,” car dealer Ray Adams said.

Hybrid vehicles have smaller gasoline engines that are supplemented by electric motors, which are recharged. The electric batteries for the hybrids are now coming with longer warranties and replaceable elements.

However, folks need to change the way the drive to improve the mile-per-gallon ratio.

“Smooth (driving) — not really punching it, is the best way if you want to get 45 to 50 miles per gallon,” Adams said.

While most car sales went down in 2007, hybrid registration jumped up 38 percent. Overall, hybrids are 2 percent of the American market.

The Toyota Prius is the dominant hybrid vehicle in America, but there are more models than there used to be.
