The gasoline and the diesel engines are said to be are among the best inventions of the industrial world, but hybrid cars help the environment and therefore this invention should be awarded as one of the most important inventions. the use less gas so less pollutants are entering the atmosphere

they don’t really help the environment they just do a lot less damage because they use less gas. less gas= less greenhouse gas(carbon dioxide) released into atmosphere. carbon dioxide causes global warming and raise of temperatures kills plants and animals that are not used to it.

I read once that hybrid cars are actually a lot worse for the environment than their regular counterparts because of all the advanced manufacturing processes that go into making hybrid vehicle batteries. Unfortunately I didn’t retain a link to the article but it basically pointed out that between the mining to get the materials, processing the materials and shipping them to the appropriate places the manufacturing process created more green house gasses than any car could ever dream of producing in it’s lifetime.
Not sure on the validity of this but it certainly is thought inspiring.

Hybrid cars certainly use less fuel and therefore produce less pollutants during the life cycle of the vehicle – but at what cost?
It can cost in the neighborhood of $3,000 – $3500 for a full hybrid battery replacement. Some of these batteries may last the life of the vehicle – some, obviously, will not. The high voltage hybrid battery and hybrid powertrain components create a potential, lethal shock hazard. The 1st generation 2001-2003 Toyota Prius battery is rated at 273.6 volts while the 2nd generation 2004-2008 Prius is rated at 201.6 volts. Many other hybrid vehicles use an even higher voltage supply – as much as 300 V DC !
The materials in nickel-metal hydride batteries can be carcinogenic, and the mining process for the material is considered highly threatening to public health and the environment.
And the debate rolls on with plenty of pros and cons for both sides to feed off.
I personally suspect that like most advancements in technology, these vehicles are at least a first step in the right direction to help wean the world off of fossil fuels – but, again, at what cost?
